Renaissance - The Debating Society

'Renaissance' - Revival or Resurgence. . .  a total Rejuvenation.

The name of our Debating Society itself encapsulates our spirit. Each year is a new beginning, bringing forth new talent, fresh opportunities and varied perspectives wherein, we reinvent ourselves in a new Avatar.

We are different because we dare. We rejoice in the words of the French essayist Joseph Joubert:

"It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."

And, this embodies our golden mantra.

We Believe

  • Norms are to be questioned.
  • The routine and the safe are not for us.
  • To debate provides fodder to the ever hungry, metamorphosing mind.

Debating societies all over the University Campus are a confluence of the academic and the real world.

Renaissance, with the tagline "Be the change" is a platform for the students to express themselves and influence change in a positive and constructive manner.

Besides sending the members to prestigious debating competitions, the society maintains an extensive database of debating societies of other colleges. This helps in obtaining timely information about competitions and conventions worth attending.

The procedure of selection to the organizing committee is a two-tier process, through which, a maximum number of 6 students are selected. The first round is an extempore, for which nearly a third of the first year students turn up, and 15 are selected, followed by rigorous interviews, to choose the final 6.

The society organizes 2 events in the academic year : Expressions & Rumination.

Expressions

This is the Intra-college JAM (Just-a-minute) competition, organized in the Ist semester, and open to all CBSites. The participants are given 60 seconds to express their views on the topic, which is usually related to the college and its administration.

Rumination

This is the annual conventional Debating competition of S.S.C.B.S., held in   the 2nd semester of the year. The format is the traditional 3+1, with 1 interjection per speaker. Participation is allowed in teams of 2.

The topic is usually abstract and open to interpretation, forcing the participants to think and meditate deeply before speaking, hence the name Rumination.

Rumination'09

Topic: "This house believes that the town is painted all red"

We saw participation from National Law University (Raipur), Rajiv Gandhi National Law University (Patiala), Delhi School of Economics, Delhi College of Engineering, Faculty of Law (Delhi), Hansraj, IP college, Amity Law School, MBICEM, and AIIMS, amongst others.

In the past year members of Renaissance have brought laurels to the college by winning at LSR, IP, KMC, KMV, GARGI, etc.
